Cape Cod, August 2025

Synopsis

Cape Cod, August 2025 immerses us in the labor of three fishermen. The film displays the tedium and the turmoil these fishermen experience on a typical day, monotonously retrieving skate from gill nets and dealing with equipment malfunctions. The film provides the audience with observations open to interpretation, only providing them with context after their relation to the subject is established. As we race faster into industrial global economies, what becomes of the old communities on the brink of collapse, and how do we regard them?

Director’s Statement

I want to pay respects to the long and arduous work these fishermen have to commit, for a product that isn’t consumed by the local community, all the while being edged out as tourist economies dominate their seafronts. This story is highly specific to this region and far reaching in it’s typicality across the United States, as any possibilities to sustain independent or small scale means of production are undercut by the global market. The form of the film reflects my experience being there, having my views on the labor altered by information provided after being immersed in the intensity of the work. In an effort to avoid didacticism, I wanted to employ the unique capabilities of film’s temporal and spacial constructions through image and sound to elicit intrigue, anticipation, shock, and sympathy in the audience.
